I decided to explore A.I. gunboat drones in this painting. Networked units would work together to secure a designated zone. This boat design is a update of a concept I did a few years ago. Although set in the near future, many of the elements depicted here can be traced back to the Vietnam War.
The drone design was inspired by the brown river PBRs/PFCs (Patrol Boat Recon/Patrol Craft Fast) used during the Vietnam War. This time the boats are crew-less and can be armed with a wide range of weapons. The sloped surfaces of the boats help to reduce its radar signature. They are also outfitted with a vehicle protection system similar to the "Trophy APS" used on Merkava tanks.
A "shark mouth" motif was incorporated onto the mini-gun housing because of my fondness for Vietnam-era aircraft (Cobras, Huey Cobras, and Phantoms).
Genetically-engineered dolphins would also be deployed to assist the boats. I call these dolphins "Engineered Intelligence Operators". Military use of dolphins can be dated back to the Vietnam War (U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program) where they were used to protect Naval assets from enemy saboteurs. The "E.I. Operators" would wear body harnesses equipped with mission specific gear. The circuitry-like tattoos seen on the skin contain bio/environmental sensors.
Finally, I added the platform complex in the background to add a sense of mystery. What is that "thing" and why are the drones protecting it? "Fennec Six" makes a surprise cameo appearance and can be seen flying in the background. This A.I. drone can be seen in more detail from my "Operation Social Gathering" painting. The wind generators supply power to the platform.
The designs and scenarios depicted here remind me of stuff I used to read about in "International Combat Arms" magazine. "ICA" was an amazing magazine and still influences me today.
